Believe it or not, an estimated 1 in 25 drivers report having fallen asleep while behind the wheel in the past thirty days. Driving while drowsy is one of the most hazardous situations you can put yourself in and has often been compared to driving while intoxicated. According to the CDC, driving while drowsy makes drivers less able to pay attention to the road ahead, slows reaction time, and affects your ability to make good driving decisions. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) estimates that over 72,000 crashes and 6,000 fatalities occur each year because of drowsy driving.
What are the warning signs? Yawning or blinking frequently, difficulty remembering the past few miles, missing exits, drifting from lane to lane, and hitting rumble strips are indicators that you are too tired to drive. Although people who do not get enough sleep are likely to drive drowsy, it also occurs with people who have sleep disorders, people who change work shifts, and people who take certain medicines.
How can you prevent it? Get enough sleep! Each adult needs between seven and nine hours of sleep per night. You should pull over if you are too tired, and take a break.
